Suggestions for Celebrating Spring

I've always loved the awakening of Spring. For me it usually begins with the shower of plum blossoms in my backyard. Then the birds begin to place their nests on the branches, and the other critters who live in my backyard start to flourish. The simple act of going to the grocery store is made more pleasant by the crop of babies in their strollers, out now for a view of the new world. It is a wonderful time to linger in the sweet sunlight. Here are a few recommendations for enhancing your Spring experience.

The Great Egg Give-Away

Most of us grew up with the practice of hunting for Easter eggs. This was fun until I realized that my brother was cheating. Here's an idea that can bring your children into a relationship with the season that is both sacred and fun.

Many variety stores sell bags of multicolored plastic eggs that are designed to be taken apart and filled with candy. These bags usually have at least a dozen plastic eggs and only cost about $2. Your local nursery probably sells large buckets of indigenous wild-flower seeds. These usually cost about $5. Add to the plastic eggs and the wildflower seeds a basket with straw, and you are ready to begin.

Lay several paper towels on the table, then place a large bowl, a cooking spoon, and the basket next to them. Place the wildflower seeds in the bowl and invite the children to stir the seeds with their hands while naming their “good wishes” for the family. For example, “I wish that Uncle Joe would get well; I wish that all the sad people could be happy.…” Let them determine the wishes. Encourage them to create a chant or poem. Then, using the cooking spoon, put one spoonful of wildflower seeds in each egg, close it, and put it in the basket. The children can have the pleasure of giving these eggs to relatives and friends as a blessing from future generations. If the relative or friend is a gardener, the child will also have the pleasure of seeing their gift grow into beautiful flowers.

Persephone's Wildflower Field

When I was young and ambitious (those pre—back injury days), I used to garden from March 20 to 24. I mean I used to garden nonstop. During those four days I would not leave my backyard. I'd till, plant, water, and dream. I didn't do anything else, especially not answer the phone. My message machine had a long-playing tape in it that could be replaced with another. So my household would simply stack them up for my listening when my planting frenzy was over.

This particular year (circa 1987), I began my March 25 tape-listening marathon and heard a series of messages with an interesting progression. The first day's tape carried an offer to go to Peru, all-expenses paid, for the Harmonic Convergence. The second day's tape was a repeat of the first message and a request to call back as soon as I got the message.
